A PRACTICAL RECOURCE FOR TEACHERS OF REFUGEES AND MIGRANT CHILDREN his resource from the Jesuit Refugee Service is very useful for teachers. The resource has three sections:
Section One This section has brief fact sheets on twenty-six countries where refugee and migrant children attending Irish schools or their parents are originally from. The fact sheets provide a summary of the economy, political background, geography and religious practice in each country. A baseline country fact sheet for Ireland is included. The main facts around the number of asylum claims, work visas and PPS numbers issued by country of origin are outlined. The number of internally displaced persons within each country, where applicable, has been indicated. The data is constantly changing, as many of the countries are the subjects of conflict and political or economic upheaval. For this reason, each country fact sheet has been dated and the intention is to provide updated information as the need arises.
Section Two The second section is designed to assist communication between school staff and parents of refugee or migrant children with limited or no English. Templates of basic letters have been translated into a number of languages to help school staff when arranging meetings with parents or inviting them to events in the school. A standard reply confirming that the parent has received the letter and is, or is not, able to attend is also included. The languages used in these templates reflect the main languages spoken by refugees and migrants in Ireland.
Section Three The final section provides some additional information and tips for working with refugee and migrant children. We included also suggestions for supporting children with limited English. If teachers require further information there is also a list of organisations working with refugees and migrants in Ireland and of useful websites included. Click here |
