OPENING OF THE COIS TINE CHARITY SHOP 115 Shandon St. Cork
In a ceremony that included prayers and blessings from both the Christian and Muslim traditions the Cois Tine Charity Shop was officially opened on the 8th of September. Fr Fachtna O’Driscoll the Provincial of the Society of African Missions cut the ribbon and declared the Shop open for business. In a speech for the occasion he thanked all those who helped set up this venture and also remarked that “the Cois Tine Shop is unique in that it is the only Charity Shop in Cork solely dedicated to promoting integration and providing services for Asylum Seekers and Refugees. Setting up the shop was itself an inclusive community venture that involved and was welcomed by people living in the Shandon St area, both immigrants and local people.” Fr O’Driscoll also emphasised the environmental benefits that the recycling of goods through the shop will bring.
The shop will be run by Cois Tine volunteers, some of whom are immigrants from places such as Cuba, Morocco, Nigeria and Ukraine. It is hoped that the Charity Shop will help to provide the income needed to run Cois Tine’s Services. Opening the shop is aimed at replacing the income Cois Tine previously received through grants but which now, due to the current economic climate, are no longer available.
The store has been well stocked through donations of clothes, books, bric-a-brac and other household items. Further donations of items that are in good condition are welcome and can be handed in either at the Shop, at Cois Tine, Ferry Lane,Popes Quay or at the Justice Office, African Missions, Wilton.
